Where Is the Tempering Valve Located on a Hot Water System?

Lukewarm showers, water that suddenly runs too hot, or a plumber asking you to check a valve you have never heard of. Here is where the tempering valve lives on storage and instantaneous systems, what it does, and why being able to reach it matters.

On most systems the tempering valve location is on the hot water outlet pipe at the top of the storage tank, within a short run of the unit: a small brass body with a coloured cap, sitting where the hot outlet meets a cold water tee. On instantaneous (continuous flow) units it sits on the hot outlet pipe beneath the unit, near the isolation valves, unless the unit is preset to deliver 50°C directly.

Finding the Valve on Storage Tank Systems

On an electric or gas storage tank the tempering valve location is almost always within arm’s reach of the top of the cylinder. The tank stores water at 60°C or above to control Legionella bacteria, and the valve blends in cold water so bathroom outlets never exceed 50°C, as Australian Standard AS/NZS 3500.4 requires.

What You Are Looking For

A brass body about the size of a fist with three pipe connections: hot in from the tank, cold in from a tee, and mixed water out. Most have a coloured plastic cap covering the adjustment screw.

Follow the Hot Outlet

Trace the pipe leaving the top of the tank. The first brass fitting with a cold water pipe joining it from the side is the valve. It is often within half a metre of the tank.

Check Under the Insulation

Outdoor tanks usually have foam lagging on the pipework. The valve may be hidden inside it, so look for a bulge or a taped section near the top.

Solar and Heat Pump Systems

On split solar and heat pump systems the valve is normally on the hot outlet of the ground-level tank. Roof-mounted close-coupled solar systems usually have it at ground level near the cold feed or booster.

Why the kitchen tap runs hotter

The 50°C limit applies to fixtures used for personal hygiene: showers, baths and bathroom basins. Kitchen and laundry taps may be fed from before the valve, which is why they can run noticeably hotter than the bathroom.

Locating the Valve on Instantaneous Systems

For continuous flow systems the tempering valve location is lower and easier to miss. These wall-mounted units heat water as it passes through, so there is no tank, and the valve is fitted to the pipework at the base of the unit.

Look Beneath the Unit

The cold inlet and hot outlet run into the bottom of the unit alongside the gas or power connection. Where a tempering valve is fitted, it sits on the hot outlet, typically just below the isolation valves.

Check the Data Plate

Some units are factory preset to deliver 50°C and are approved for bathroom supply without a separate valve. The data plate or manual will say so. If it does not, expect a valve in the pipework.

Do Not Rely on the Controller

A kitchen or bathroom controller pad lets you choose the temperature at the unit, but the tempering valve still caps what reaches the bathroom. If the controller is set high and the shower stays lukewarm, the valve is the likely reason.

Why Access is Important for Repairs

A tempering valve is a working part with a thermostatic element that wears out. Australian Standard AS 4032.3 calls for tempering valves to be replaced at intervals not exceeding five years, and a plumber cannot test, adjust or replace one they cannot reach.

  • Five-year replacement. The element inside is not serviceable, so the whole valve is swapped. Clear access turns a quick job into a quick job, rather than a pipework rebuild.
  • Blocked inlet filters. Debris on the hot inlet filter is a common cause of weak or lukewarm hot water. Clearing it needs the unions undone.
  • Fault finding. Water that is too hot, too cold or swinging between the two often traces back to the valve. Being able to test it in place saves diagnosis time.
  • Boxed-in or buried valves. Valves hidden behind cladding, under decking or inside cupboards add labour to every future visit. Leave clear working room around them.
  • Compliance. When a hot water system is replaced, a compliant tempering valve is part of the installation and must be certified by a licensed plumber.

Every device in your home runs on one of two kinds of current. The grid delivers one, while most electronics quietly convert it to the other. Meanwhile, a rooftop solar system does both.

Alternating Current (AC)

The current changes direction 50 times a second, which is the 50 hertz on your bill. Because AC is easy to step up and down with transformers, the grid uses it to move power over long distances.

Direct Current (DC)

In contrast, direct current flows in one direction only. Batteries, solar panels, phone chargers and the LEDs inside your downlights all work on DC. For instance, the small box on a charger converts AC from the wall into DC.

The Journey of Electricity to Your Home

What is electricity doing between the power station and your kettle? In essence, it passes through five stages, and the voltage changes at almost every one of them.

1. Generation

Coal, gas, hydro, wind and solar farms, as well as millions of rooftops, generate power. Most large generators produce AC at a few thousand volts.

2. Transmission

Next, transformers step the voltage up to tens or hundreds of thousands of volts. Higher voltage means less energy is lost as heat over long distances.

3. Substations

Closer to towns, substations then step the voltage back down and route power into the local distribution network.

4. Distribution

Poles and underground cables carry power through the suburbs. Finally, a local transformer, often the grey box on a pole, reduces it to 230 volts for homes.

5. Your Meter and Switchboard

Power enters through the meter, then passes the main switch, safety switches and circuit breakers on your switchboard. These split it into the circuits that feed each part of the home.

In South East Queensland, the poles, wires and transformers in stages three and four are run by the local distributor. As a result, a street-wide outage is reported to them rather than to your electricity retailer.

Basic Electrical Concepts Explained Simply

Most people who ask what is electricity are really asking what the words on their bill and their switchboard mean. Fortunately, if you think of water in a pipe, then the terms fall into place.

Voltage (Volts)

The pressure pushing the charge along, like water pressure in a pipe. Australian mains is 230 volts, and consequently it can push current through your body with ease.

Current (Amps)

How much charge is flowing, like the volume of water moving through the pipe. Circuit breakers are rated in amps, so they trip when a circuit draws too much.

Resistance (Ohms)

How much a material resists the flow. Copper has low resistance, so it is used for wiring. A heater element, on the other hand, has high resistance, which is exactly what turns current into heat.

Power (Watts)

The rate at which energy is used: volts multiplied by amps. For example, a 2,400 watt kettle draws about 10 amps from a 230 volt outlet.

Energy (Kilowatt Hours)

Power over time, and the unit you are billed for. Therefore, running that 2,400 watt kettle for an hour uses 2.4 kilowatt hours.

Circuits and Earth

Electricity needs a complete loop to flow. The earth wire gives fault current a safe path to the ground, so a safety switch can cut the power before anyone is hurt.

Essential Electrical Safety Tips for Homeowners

Electricity is safe as long as it stays inside the wires and the fittings designed for it. These habits keep it there.

  • Do not do your own electrical work. In Queensland, it is illegal for anyone without a licence to carry out electrical work, and that includes replacing a power point or a light switch.
  • Test your safety switches every three months. Press the test button on the switchboard, and the switch should trip instantly. If it does not, or if you have none, then call a licensed electrician.
  • Do not overload power boards. Heaters, kettles and other high-draw appliances should plug straight into the wall, never into a chain of double adaptors.
  • Keep water and electricity apart. Dry your hands before touching switches, and never use appliances near a full sink or bath.
  • Check cords and plugs regularly. Frayed cords, warm plugs, scorch marks or a burning smell mean stop using it immediately and, of course, get it looked at.
  • Know your main switch. Above all, everyone in the house should know where the switchboard is and how to turn the power off in an emergency.
