What Is a Gas Compliance Certificate in Queensland?
In Queensland, a gas compliance certificate (formally a gas system compliance certificate) is the official record that gas work on your property was completed safely and to standard by someone licensed to do it. Under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004, the licensed installer who carries out the work must issue the certificate, with a copy going to you as the owner and a copy to your gas supplier.
The system was modernised recently: since July 2025 most installations no longer require a physical compliance plate (caravans are the main exception), and since February 2026 certificates are lodged digitally through the RSHQ Portal, Queensland’s online regulatory system. We handle the inspection, the certification and the lodgement, so your paperwork is done properly the first time.
When Do You Need a Gas Certificate in QLD?
You need a compliance certificate whenever licensed gas work is carried out, including:
- A new gas appliance installation, such as a gas cooktop, oven, heater, gas hot water system or a fixed BBQ bayonet point.
- Replacing an existing appliance, for example swapping an old gas hot water unit for a new one.
- Modifying or extending your gas system, like adding outlets or changing pipework as part of connections and conversions.
- Starting or switching gas supply: suppliers require a copy of the property’s compliance certificate before they can deliver gas to a property they have not supplied before.
Two common misconceptions worth clearing up. Selling a standard house in Queensland does not require a gas certificate by law, although buyers and solicitors often request the certificates from past gas work, so keeping them on file protects your sale. And Queensland does not impose a fixed periodic gas recertification schedule on landlords the way some other states do; certificates attach to gas work when it happens. Landlords still have a duty to keep gas appliances safe and well maintained, and holding current certificates for all gas work on the property is the practical way to demonstrate it.
